Which level are you going for

The CSIA pathway from Level 1 to 3: Level 1 is the way in; Levels 2 and 3 each require passing both a skiing and a teaching component.

Earn your Canadian CSIA certification in Japan — no flight to Canada or New Zealand. Levels 1, 2 and 3, taught by Canadian examiners at Niseko, Rusutsu, Kiroro and Moiwa. Resorts vary by level; see each one below. Spaces are limited.

CSIA Course + Exam is the official CSIA program. The stated length already includes the training days and ends with the exam.

Pinnacle Preparation Clinic is a separate Pinnacle program held beforehand, and it is optional — available for Levels 1 and 2; for Level 3 there is no clinic, so book one-to-one sessions with an examiner instead. The clinic helps you gauge where your technique stands, raise your level, and go into the exam prepared.

Entry requirement
14 years old on the first day of the course. Skiing ability: a confident, independent skier, comfortable on blue and black runs, consistently parallel while controlling your speed.
Who it suits
Skiers who are already solid and want to take the first step toward certifying as an instructor.

The Level 1 course develops your skiing technique and puts the Canadian Teaching Approach into practice, working on beginner through intermediate terrain and developing students up to an intermediate level. It covers teaching new skiers of all ages with a focus on teaching children: safe teaching, the Canadian Teaching Approach and lesson planning, CSIA technical concepts, ski improvement, and guest service and communication skills. Successful candidates are certified to teach first-time skiers through intermediate-level students. Note that this is not a learn-to-ski program — you will be developing existing skills, not learning to ski from scratch.

One of the following: CSIA Level 1, Snow Park Certification, ACA Entry Level Certified status, or ACA Development Level Trained status.
Who it suits
CSIA Members holding Level 1 or Snow Park certification who want to teach more effectively.

This program improves "situational teaching" skills, combining practical ski teaching methods, technical understanding and development, and guest service skills. Level 2 is assessed in two parts, Skiing and Teaching, and both must be passed for the full certification. The skiing side develops your performance to a consolidated level on groomed and ungroomed blue terrain across a variety of turn types; the teaching side practises approaches and strategies for a broader range of student skill levels.

Full CSIA Level 2 Certification — both the skiing and the teaching components. Passing only one of them is not enough to move up.

Working instructors with teaching experience who want to refine lesson design and skill application.

Level 3 is for instructors with practical experience and knowledge, looking to refine their lesson design and skill application. With an in-depth understanding of the relationship between skiing skills and performance, a Level 3 instructor can ski advanced terrain at a refined level and adapt lessons to meet any student’s needs, keeping lessons fun, safe and interactive. The skiing side develops advanced tactics on blue and black groomed and off-piste terrain, along with the ability to assess and develop your own skiing.

Who does what

Pinnacle

Hosts the CSIA courses run in the Niseko region of Hokkaido, Japan, and runs its own exam preparation clinics. We provide the venue, the logistics, registration and day-to-day support.

CSIA

Runs the certification courses and exams, assesses candidates, and issues the certification. The credential comes from the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance.

About CSIA

Canadian Ski Instructors' Alliance / Alliance des moniteurs de ski du Canada

The CSIA (Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance) certification is the most recognised ski instructor system in Canada, with a pathway of four levels. Level 1 is an introductory certification aimed at instructors teaching beginners. From Level 2, the required tasks and terrain difficulty increase, with higher demands on both skiing performance and teaching ability. Levels 3 and above require more comprehensive skills and precise manoeuvres, including long turns, short turns and moguls. Every level emphasises the safety component. Systematic training gives you a framework for both skiing technique and teaching, improves your own performance, and lets you guide students safely and effectively so they enjoy their skiing.

We also offer specialised pre-course training ahead of the official certification courses, conducted by experienced trainers. It helps you become familiar with the skiing standards and teaching frameworks, and gives you practice opportunities before the exam.

Registration guidelines and procedure

1. Complete the registration form

Contact customer service to receive and complete the registration form.

2. Payment

We send you a payment link. Spots are limited and secured on a first-come, first-served basis upon receipt of full payment.

3. Registration confirmed

After full payment has been received, we will complete the final review and issue written confirmation. Your registration is confirmed once written confirmation has been issued by Pinnacle.

4. Pre-exam notification

One week before the exam, CSIA sends a confirmation email with the meeting location and class information.

5. Candidate guide

Download and thoroughly review the Candidate Guide for the level you are entering (Level 1 / Level 2 / Level 3) in advance, so you are fully prepared for the course and exam content.

CSIA exam FAQ

Is Pinnacle’s training the same thing as the official CSIA certification course?

Pinnacle runs its own CSIA-focused exam preparation training, and separately hosts the official CSIA certification courses in the Niseko region of Japan.

Does the training guarantee a pass?

The exam is assessed by CSIA, and the result depends on your performance on the day.

Priority enrollment

Spots are limited and confirmed only on a first-come, first-served basis with payment.

Retesting

Please contact customer service directly if you need to register for a re-examination.

Course dates and minimum numbers

We work hard to avoid changes, but course dates are subject to change, and courses must meet a minimum number of candidates in order to operate. If a date changes or a course cannot run, we will notify enrolled candidates as early as possible and arrange either a postponement or a refund.

Rescheduling policy

In the event of force majeure (such as the examiner being unable to attend the course due to visa issues, personal health reasons, etc.), we will promptly notify all enrolled students and arrange either postponement or a full refund. The organizer is not responsible for any additional costs incurred as a result of the force majeure event.

Course fee

Included: exam registration and materials, course setup and operational costs, service and venue usage fees (excluding lift tickets). Excluded: lift passes, accommodation and meals, transportation, accident insurance (must be purchased separately), equipment rental and gear costs, all other personal expenses, and anything not mentioned above.

Refund and transfer policy

More than 14 days before the class start date, the enrollment is transferable to another individual but non-refundable. Within 14 days of the class start date, the enrollment is non-transferable and non-refundable. Transfer or resale of a spot at an increased price is prohibited.

Age limit

Participants must be at least 14 years old on the first day of the course. Those under 14 are encouraged to enroll in private ski lessons [Learn more about private lessons].

How do I prepare for the CSIA exam? Is there official material I can study?

Download and read through the CSIA Candidate Guide (Level 1 / Level 2 / Level 3) to familiarise yourself with the course and exam content. You can also book a preparation clinic or private sessions, or contact us and we will put together a preparation plan for you.

I am certified with another system — can I enter CSIA Level 2 or above directly?

Yes, but you need to apply for an assessment in advance. Email CSIA head office in English at national@snowpro.com to request an Equivalency assessment, which grants you Affiliate Member status. State what you need in the email and attach your existing certificates and contact details. Processing takes about 10 to 15 working days, so make sure you apply well before the registration deadline.

My CSIA membership shows as expired when I log in — isn’t it valid for a year? How do I renew?

CSIA membership runs from 1 October to 30 September the following year. To renew, log in to the CSIA members’ area and renew there.
